Nutrition Business Monitor: A new self assessment tool for SMEs

Nutrition Business Monitor is a project that started in April 2019 in partnership with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN). In the framework of this 3-year project, a new voluntary self-assessment tool will be developed and piloted in two Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Countries with National SUN Business Networks (SBNs). The aim of the tool is to assess the performance of SMEs in increasing the availability and affordability of food and beverage (F&B) products of high nutritional quality in Nigeria and Bangladesh. Analysis of data collected by the tool will inform recommendations to business and local policymakers on how to improve companies’ performance on nutrition to the benefit of consumers at country level. In addition, the project has a capacity-building component; educational material and trainings will be provided to the companies involved.

In Nigeria, the SUN Business Network is one of the strongest globally with 95 members and it continues to grow and develop with new activities. Nigeria is also the most populous country in Africa and faces multiple nutrition challenges, e.g. it has the second highest burden of stunted children in the world, with a national prevalence rate of 43 percent of children under five – translating into 16.5 million children.

Bangladesh has a SUN Business Network is currently developing its strategy and preparing to grow; in a country where there are approximately 1 million SMEs, there is huge potential for such a network and change. Bangladesh also has among the highest rates of malnutrition in the world and more than 54% of preschool-age children, equivalent to more than 9.5 million children, are stunted, 56% are underweight and more than 17% are wasted.
