60 millions: Carrefour, Intermarché, E.Leclerc: major retailers struggling with climate change
11 February 2026European NGOs have assessed the climate commitments of our major retailers. Carrefour, Intermarché, E.Leclerc… They can all do better!
In France, we buy nearly 70% of our food in hypermarkets and supermarkets. This gives them a prime opportunity to improve the environmental impact of food production and consumption. But what is the reality?
To find out, the Dutch think tank Questionmark and a coalition of European associations (Climate Action Network, Madre Brava, ProVeg International, and WWF Netherlands) ranked 27 major retailers from eight European countries based on their climate commitments.
None of the most virtuous French supermarkets
In a report published at the end of January 2026, these NGOs assessed the compliance of the major food retailers’ climate plans with the 2015 Paris Agreement (limiting global warming to 1.5°C by the end of the century, compared to the pre-industrial era), and how these retailers are promoting a transition to a sustainable food system richer in plant-based proteins.
Let’s not keep you in suspense any longer: no French retailer is among the top 10 most virtuous distributors. Only Carrefour manages to come out on top, ranking 12th out of 27, followed at a distance by Intermarché (20th) and then E.Leclerc, bringing up the rear.
