The private sector is key to transforming food systems, and to delivering healthy and sustainable diets for all. Over the last century, the private sector has helped to revolutionize what and how we eat. It has brought improved food security and food safety.
However, people purchase food without seeing its true cost on the receipt—to public health, the planet, and the people who grow it. To ensure more equitable, sustainable and nutritious food systems, coordinated action among all major food system actors is required to shape markets.
In 2026, ATNi, Stronger Foundations for Nutrition and the Gates Foundation have co-convened two invitation-only dialogues to launch the new MarketFit Nutrition 2035 initiative—a multi-year, multi-country initiative to transform food markets through national guardrails and incentives.
- Dialogue #1 (11 February) introduced the initiative’s four pillars and target countries.
- Dialogue #2 (5 May) shared SUN–ATNi survey findings and sharpened the Theory of Change.
In May, the initiative launched in East Africa after securing resources from two founding donors—the Gates Foundation and UK FCDO. Waterloo Foundation and SDC have since joined, providing resources to build components of this initiative.
