Governments worldwide are implementing stronger food environment policies to address the rising burden of diet-related non-communicable diseases.

As more countries have, or are considering, implementing policies to improve the healthiness of the food environment, including mandatory front-of-package labelling and reformulation targets, courts are becoming an increasingly important arena in which food-policy debates are contested.

Companies and industry groups frequently use litigation and legal challenges to delay, weaken, or overturn public-health measures. At the same time, civil society organisations are exploring strategic litigation as a tool to strengthen policy implementation, improve accountability, and advance public-health objectives.

This Policy Fix webinar will explore how strategic litigation is currently shaping food policy globally. We will cover what strategic litigation is, and how it being used by actors throughout the food system.

Speakers will include:

  • Lighthouse reporting will share the outcome of a series of investigations, with partners on five continents, revealing the global lobbying tactics of food corporations.
  • Kelin, a civil society organization in Kenya will share another approach, how they are using strategic litigation and other legal mechanisms to support corporate accountability, nutrition information, marketing practices, and ultimately the right to food in Kenya.
