Global Index 2027
Assessing the policies, practices, and product portfolios of 25 of the world's largest F&B manufacturers—covering 30% of global packaged F&B sales
Food and beverage (F&B) manufacturers are shaping global food environments, influencing the availability, affordability, and marketing of foods consumed worldwide. Their portfolios and practices shape dietary patterns linked to rising obesity and persistent undernutrition. As poor diets are a leading contributor to non-communicable diseases and deaths worldwide, corporate accountability, effective regulation and improved private sector performance are urgently needed. Understanding how these companies perform and where stronger action is needed, is essential to advancing healthier, more sustainable food systems.
ATNi’s Global Index 2027 will assess the policies, practices, and product portfolios of 25 of the world’s largest F&B manufacturers—covering 30% of global packaged F&B sales—to identify progress, gaps, and opportunities to drive improved nutrition outcomes.
Building on more than 15 years of ATNi’s market shaping and benchmarking—including previous Global and Country Indexes—the Global Index 2027 will provide independent, evidence-based insights to inform and catalyse action from industry, investors, civil society, and policymakers.
Scope

Methodology
The review of the Index methodology is currently underway, with the final methodology expected to be published in September 2026.
This iteration places greater emphasis on independent performance measures to assess not only what companies commit to, but also how they perform in practice. Revisions aim to strengthen the robustness and relevance of the assessment by prioritising topics with clear international guidance and the strongest opportunity to drive corporate accountability.
Indicators with limited comparability, ambiguous global standards or highly variable company responses are being reviewed. At the same time, maintaining comparability over time remains a key priority, ensuring the Index can continue tracking company progress across iterations.
Key Topics
Product Profile: Evaluate the nutritional quality of companies’ product portfolios across global markets, using internationally recognised Nutrient Profile Models and approaches to assess processing.
Fortification: Review company approaches to micronutrient fortification, particularly in markets where deficiencies are prevalent, including the extent to which fortification is applied to healthier products.
Reporting using Nutrient Profiling Models (NPMs): Assess company transparency and disclosure on product healthiness using (inter-)national standards.
Nutrition Governance: Assess the extent to which companies embed nutrition into their corporate governance, including targets, accountability mechanisms, and integration into business decision-making.
Responsible Marketing: Assess company policies and practices to restrict marketing of less healthy products, particularly to children.
Responsible Labelling: Assess company approaches to product labelling, including transparency and alignment with relevant labelling frameworks and regulations.
Pricing and Affordability: Examine how companies price healthier versus less healthy products, and to what extent they contribute to improving affordability of nutritious foods.
Sustainability: Assess how companies address environmental impacts alongside healthier product offerings and evaluate the environmental sustainability of companies’ portfolios, using an eco-scoring approach.
The projected timeline for this project is March 2026 to November 2027. Project findings will be published and launched in Q4 2027.
